Lesson #109: Vocabulary Builder: Fruit and Vegetables
Can you remember back to Lesson #106 where we learnt a whole bunch of Animal names in Hindi? Well today we’re going to do something similar, but we’re going to learn the names of some Fruits and Vegetables in Hindi! Again just like in the Animals lesson, we’ve actually seen plenty of these already in other lessons so you should hopefully know some of them!
Are you ready to get straight into it? Remember that there’s a (M) after the word if the Hindi noun is Masculine or a (F) if it’s Feminine! To start with, the Hindi word for Fruit is फल phal (M) and for Vegetable it’s सब्ज़ी sabzee (F). So here goes…
अंगूर angoor - Grapes (M)
अनानास anaanaas - Pineapple (M)
अनार anaar - Pomegranate (M)
आम aam - Mango (M)
आलू aaloo - Potato (M)
ककड़ी kakree - Cucumber (F)
कद्दू kaddoo - Pumpkin (M)
केला kelaa - Banana (M)
गाजर gaajar - Carrot (F)
टमाटर tamaatar - Tomato (M)
नींबू neemboo - Lemon (M)
प्याज़ pyaaz - Onion (M)
फूल गोभी phool gobhee - Cauliflower (F) [1]
बन्द गोभी band gobhee - Cabbage (F) [1]
बैंगन baigan - Eggplant (Aubergine) (M)
मटर matar - Peas (M)
मीठी मकई meethee makaee - Sweetcorn (F) [2]
संतरा santaraa - Orange (M) [3]
सेब seb - Apple (M)
[1] Both Cabbage and Cauliflower are often referred to as just गोभी gobhee
[2] Sweetcorn is also known as भुट्टा bhuttaa (M)
[3]] Orange (the fruit) is know as नारंगी naarangee (M), which is the name of the colour Orange in Hindi.
Phew! Wow! So how was that? Be sure to read through this lesson many times. Why not practice writing down each Hindi word several times to help you remember the word! Is there another fruit or vegetable you want to know the Hindi word for? Then please feel free to leave a comment just below with your question.
