Today (March 13th) is my birthday! So for that reason I thought it would be a great idea to go through some Hindi phrases related to Birthdays! You’ll even be able to practice your newly learnt phrases straight away by wishing me a Happy Birthday (I’m only joking, you don’t have to!)
Hopefully I’ve got some lovely birthday cake like this waiting for me somewhere!
So are you ready to begin? Great! Well first things first, the Hindi word for Birthday is जन्मदिन janmdin. Say it again जन्मदिन janmdin!. This word is actually ‘constructed’ just like the English word Birthday, the word जन्म janm means birth and दिन din - day!
So how do we say Happy Birthday in Hindi? Well, all we say is…
आपको जन्मदिन मुबारक हो
aapko janmdin mubaarak ho
- Happy Birthday to you
Click the play button above to hear the phrase pronounced! Be sure to listen to it loads of times to make sure you get it perfect. This can even be shortened, exactly like English, to जन्मदिन मुबारक हो janmdin mubaarak ho which means - Happy Birthday!
A great question to ask all your friends is “When is your birthday?”. To say this we literally say “Your birthday when is?”. Think about the Hindi sentence for a second, what do you think it would be? That’s right, we say…
आपका जन्मदिन कब है? - When is your birthday?
If you’ve forgotten then the word कब kab means when. And to reply to this you might want to say “My birthday is today”. How would you say that? Remember that the word आज aaj means - today. So yeah that’s right, we say…
मेरा जन्मदिन आज है
meraa janmdin aaj hai
- My Birthday is today!
We haven’t covered the months of the year in Hindi yet, so for that reason I don’t want to teach you how to say sentences like “My Birthday is the 3rd of June” just quite yet. But I promise you that we’ll be covering them very soon!
Today has been quite a relaxed and easy lesson, so hopefully you’ve enjoyed it! Try and remember the phrase जन्मदिन मुबारक हो janmdin mubaarak ho - Happy Birthday! because it will be great to say it to all your Hindi friends!
